Consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon
I am an Otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon, fully trained in all aspects of ENT. I am a keen advocate of minimal access techniques such as trans-oral laser resection.
I am currently ENT Lead at the world-renowned Queen Victoria Hospital, and Cancer Lead for Medway Maritime Hospital. I routinely chair the West Kent MDT for Head and Neck Cancers and regularly attend the Thyroid MDT. I am also the Specialty editor for ENT for the Royal College of Surgeons own Journal, The Annals.
I am an advocate of innovation and research, and am the surgical lead for the HoT trial in Medway. This is a national trial into the treatment of patients with Thyroid Cancers. We are currently the only centre to offer this trial within Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
I run clinics on a weekly basis at Maidstone, Medway and Queen Victoria.
I read medicine at Newcastle University and was awarded the Stephen Scott Scholarship for performance in my undergraduate examinations. I was also fortunate to competitively win a Wolfson Bursary to fund an intercalating degree resulting in a BMedSci (Hons).
After medical school, I undertook a foundation programme in the Newcastle Upon Tyne Teaching Hospitals before starting surgical training in the East of England. During this time, I completed my membership exams for General Surgery (MRCS) before finding my passion in Otorhinolaryngology/ENT. I also gained my Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (DOHNS).
I then went on to pursue my research ambitions in head and neck oncology and was awarded grants by both the Royal College of Surgeons England and Cancer Research UK. I was also awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) academic clinical fellowship which allowed me to pursue higher surgical training in the Mersey deanery alongside research. During this time, I also pursued my teaching ambitions which led to me being awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and being made a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
I completed my higher surgical training rotating through Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, the Royal Liverpool and Aintree University Hospital. I was awarded my Fellowship for the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS ORL-HN) in November 2017.
Having completed surgical training and gained my Certificate of completion of training (CCT) within the UK, I sought advanced subspecialist training internationally. I successfully won funding from both the Royal College of Surgeons (The Colledge Family Memorial Fellowships) and the Peel Foundation (The Peel Rothwell Jackson Travel Fellowship). These facilitated me travelling to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Australia. Here I undertook this prestigious clinical fellowship, developing expertise in all aspects of advanced head and neck surgery including laser and robotic work.
I have a passion for research and training. I actively recruit for ongoing clinical trials and act as a surgical mentor for several junior trainees. This research and training focus ensures that I am abreast of current advances within my field and allows me to offer my patients the highest quality of care.
